These guidelines are important for proper training as the instructors need to see the dancers as a unified group. A "uniform" also instills discipline in our students and helps to build a confident, professional dancer. It may feel restrictive at first but parents love having a dress code. It takes the guess work out of what to wear to dance class and eliminates conflicts between parent and dancer.
Please consider purchasing all your dancewear needs at our studio! This will ensure you get the proper essentials and it will keep the revenue in our studio where we can put it right back into your child's experience! Selling shoes and dancewear at our studio is an important source of income for us that allows us to provide updated equipment and facilities for our instructors and students!
Twinkle Star Dancers Ages 2.5-6 (pastel colors only)
Girls: Pink ballet shoes and black patent leather tap shoes. We highly recommend the shoes sold at IDT. The Ballet shoes have no strings to distract our dancers and the Tap shoes have easy velcro for on and off. Boys: Black ballet shoes and black slip on tap boots.
Dancers will be expected to bring their dance bags into class and change shoes themselves (please practice at home). As part of every Twinkle Star Dancer’s dress code, “Sparkle” the Bear is required for each dancer. Sparkle plays a big role in the Ballet portion of our dance class each week.
Girl dancers must wear solid pastel – pink, pale blue or lavender including skirted dresses, leotards, and ballet skirts. Dancers must wear tights – only white, pink or natural are approved colors. No patterned leggings or dance attire please. Boy dancers wear solid white or black t-shirts and plain black shorts or leggings. This creates a uniformity to our classes and it actually helps our dancers to focus better because they feel like a dancer when they are dressed like one!
Hair should be pulled up, off the face and secured with barrettes or a headband. NO jewelry except stud earrings.
Sweet Peas Gymnastics
CLEAN bare feet with trimmed toenails please. Approved attire includes biketards, leotards with shorts/leggings, or a tight fitting tank top that will not ride up when upside down paired with shorts/leggings. Hair should be tightly secured in a braid, ponytail, or bun. When choosing a hairstyle, consider that many skills in gymnastics such as various rolls and bridges require the student to balance on the top of their head. This causes them to pull their own hair or turn their neck sideways and can cause injury. Fancy bows and clips are not practical in gymnastics class.
Male students should wear t-shirts with shorts or pants. Nothing too baggy please.
Showstars Combo Classes (black only)
Jazz/Hip Hop Combo - Students must purchase black jazz shoes (RD013201) and Ultra Vibe Slip On Dance Sneaker (W375) in black. Ballet I (colors allowed)
Female dancers wear classic pink leather ballet shoes. Stretch Ballet Shoe (150) is recommended. Solid color leotard and pink tights only are required for this class. Ballet skirts will be permitted at this age. No patterned leggings or dance attire. Hair must be secured in a bun for ballet class. No jewelry except stud earrings.
Male dancers should wear plain white or black t-shirts with black shorts or leggings and class assigned, black ballet shoes.
Ballet II through VI (colors allowed)
All dancers must wear classic pink canvas ballet shoes. Stretch Canvas Ballet Shoe (RD013400) is recommended. Female dancers wear a solid color leotard with pink tights. No ballet skirts please. No patterned leggings or dance attire. Hair must be secured in a bun for ballet class. No jewelry except stud earrings. These guidelines are especially important in ballet class for proper training as the instructor needs to see the dancers body clearly. Male dancers should wear plain white or black t-shirts with black shorts or leggings and should consider a "ballet belt". Black canvas ballet shoes (RD013401).
Hip Hop
Competition dancers wait for our directions for shoes
Hip Hop sneakers should NEVER be worn outdoors and should be treated as any other dance shoe. Ultra Vibe Slip On Dance Sneaker (W375) is REQUIRED. All students may wear any style dance attire including crop tops, sweats or athletic wear. Consider some tricks in Hip Hop have students in an inverted position, therefore tight fitting tops or sports bras under a shirt are appreciated for our female students. Hair should be secured out of the face in a braid or ponytail. No jewelry except stud earrings. Please note that although the dress code is more relaxed in Hip Hop, it is important that our students enter the class dressed for success. We prefer them not show up looking like they just left the playground at school. We believe this can make a huge difference in their performance in class.
Modern
Clean bare feet and solid dark color crop top or leotard with solid color dance shorts or leggings are required. Absolutely no bra tops. Tights are not required. Hair must be secured in a bun, ponytail, or braid. No jewelry except stud earrings. Male dancers should wear solid color t-shirts with shorts or leggings and should consider a "ballet belt".
Tap Leveled Classes (colors allowed)

Female and Male dancers wear black oxford style lace up tap shoes. The fit of tap shoes on the heel of the foot is crucial to proper technique and execution of steps. Please find a shoe that doesn't slip down on the feel when dancers rise up on the balls of their feet. Style (581) at IDT is a good shoe, but not a good "fit" for all dancers, especially those with narrow feet or small ankles. Dancers may wear any solid color tight fitting top, crop top or leotard with either tights or solid color shorts or leggings. Skirted dance dresses and ballet skirts are permitted. Absolutely no bra tops. Hair should be secured out of the face in a braid or ponytail. No jewelry except stud earrings.
Male students should wear solid color shorts or pants with a solid color t-shirt. If wearing pants, they may not be baggy. We need to see your ankles and heels.
Jazz Leveled Classes (colors allowed)

Students must purchase black jazz shoes for class. Stretch Slip on Jazz Shoe (RD013201) or Premium Pull On Jazz Shoe (601) are recommended. Female students may wear any solid color leotard or crop top with tights or solid color shorts or leggings to class. Absolutely no bra tops. Hair should be pulled up/back and secured out of face. No jewelry except stud earrings.
Male students should wear solid color shorts or leggings and a solid color t-shirt with no graphics or writing. If wearing pants, they may not be baggy or past ankles. We need to see your legs and feet. Please consider purchasing and wearing a ballet belt.
Tumbling (colors and patterns allowed)
Black leather gymnastics shoes (172) are required at IDT Main (these are different than black jazz shoes or black ballet shoes). Please do not purchase cheap shoes from Amazon. They do not hold up and they make a crumbly mess in our room. Shoes should not be worn outside under any circumstances. Approved attire includes any color or pattern biketards, leotards with shorts/leggings, or a tight fitting tank top that will not ride up when upside down paired with shorts/leggings. Crop tops will be permitted, but should be full coverage over the chest area, hitting the student just under the neckline. Bra tops are not permitted. Hair should be tightly secured in a braid, ponytail, or bun. When choosing a hairstyle, consider that many skills in tumbling such as various rolls and bridges can cause the tumbler to balance on the top of their head or pull their own hair. This can cause tumblers to injure themselves trying to avoid this situation. Fancy bows and clips are not practical in tumbling class.
Male tumblers should wear t-shirts with shorts or leggings and required black leather gymnastics shoes.
